I looked at this book several times before I bought it, since the version of ZBrush referenced is not the most current. My concerns had absolutely no validity. This book is incredible! It's not just a book either. Hours and hours of video accompany the amazingly informative text. This is one of those products that make me think, "Where do I even start to list the positives?" In a nutshell, I can't list all the benefits that come from owning this book and the accompanying DVD, so I'll just touch on the major perks. 1) Anything and everything you need to sculpt a figure is provided, including ZTools and objs. 2) The book/DVD set is a complete anatomical reference for artists. 3) The author is an excellent instructor, stunningly thorough, and does not skim the subject. 4) The author's techniques are not hard to understand, plus they yield success. I devoutly hope that a similar work, focused on the study of the female anatomy, is to come. If I have enough nickels to rub together, I will be first in line to buy it.
I'm new to zbrush and indeed any 3d application, so suffice to say, I really needed a resource that would hold my hand through the process of getting to grips with zbrush. Scott Spencer doesn't assume you know everything and he also assumes that people will jump in to random chapters and expect to understand how the software works. Thanks to Scott's careful handling, even if you do jump in too deep you will soon find yourself on firm ground as Scott reiterates keystrokes and mouse clicks needed to perform exercises. Two notes of caution: firstly, the book is based on a previous release of zbrush so users of zbrush 4r3 or later would be WELL advised to couple this book with Zbrush character creation 2nd edition also by Scott Spencer. Secondly, zbrush is addictave; don't buy any books on zbrush unless you are prepaired to cease functioning as a normal human. I would also highly reccomend Introducing zbrush 4. If you buy the ebook, zsupporting Dvd can be downloaded from booksupport.Wiley.com. thankyou for a hugely enjoyable learning experience.
I've been using Zbrush for less than a year, but this book or anything written by Scott Spencer is an extremely valuable resource. I've been a fan of his work since watching his Gnomon Workshop tutorials. He explains anatomy to the very last detail and I found myself using this book not only to create realistic looking models, but stylized ones as well. The anatomical foundation can be applied to any humanoid. The videos included with the book are a real help and make it worth buying the paperback rather than the ebook.
This is so far the best ZBrush book, and possibly the best 3D character modeling book period. Spencer has done all the work for the reader, it couldn't be any simpler. It's easy to read and straight to the point. Spencer goes into great detail about the tools and digital sculpting. In all the years I've bought stuff online I don't think I have ever written a review, this time I had to. This book is on my desk at all times, for technical reference and artistic inspiration. If you are looking for a great cg sculpting/modeling book then right now this is the only choice. Aside from taking an actual ZBrush character sculpting class in person, I see nothing that comes even close to this book. Spencer even covers human anatomy in detail just as any artist should know and explains in detail what tool would be best for which part of the sculpting process and how to use it. During my time in college I've meet life drawing instructors that covered anatomy less than this guy.
This book appears to be excellent. However I realized as soon as I opened it that I made a serious mistake ordering the Kindle edition. The book is quite dependent on the CD that comes with the paper edition, and there is no web site to separately download the CD files. Thus you pay almost as much as the hard copy and lose much of the functionality.
Great book with an even better companion DVD. I never checked out companion DVD's for books before but decided to check this out. It is literally an entire video tutorial on many of the subjects Scott goes over in the book. If the book itself isn't enough reason to buy it then the DVD is.
