I just got this book today, and I can honestly say it's one of my best book purchases. Even though the cover has a little bit of a retro feel, the drum patterns are modern. I'm learning something new on every page.Chapter 1 starts assuming you know nothing about Ableton, and you don't really need to use Ableton at all for this book, but it quickly gets out of that. Once you get into the grooves in Chapter 2, which is most of the book, it's great. Grooves are built up slowly, one or two elements at a time, and the thought behind BPM, timing, velocity, and sound choices are all thoroughly explained. The patterns groove from the get-go, even with just the kick, snare, and hats.Read the other reviews for help with the "missing files" issue. I recommend installing the pack by double clicking the ALP file instead of trying to use the racks from the folder directly, but you'll want to hold on to the rest of those files to have the individual the samples. If you're having trouble with the racks, keep at it or email support, because they're definitely worth it. Also, the download link is on the first page (the one that you skip because it sticks to the cover). Took me forever to find.

Apparently a few things were updated while this book remained the same, so it is difficult to get started. To use this book to the best advantage, you need to download Ableton LIve from one place (the link provide with the book doesn't work) and a library of drum kits from another online site. First, the starting instuctions for Ableton Live don't match the installation, so you have to figure out where you are. Then the drum kit library doesn't include the initial drum kit you need to go through the 'Getting Started' section. So already, you're abandoned in the midst of this frankly awkward software. Ableton Live is not like you can transfer your knowledge from the DAW you've always used. Maybe after I can get over all the missing information, I'd find some value. Not now.

The book is good, but the missing files drive me insane. How can you provide incomplete excersize package? This SUCKS. I wouldn't of bought it if I knew

Are you getting the message "Missing Files" from Ableton upon trying to do the first exercise? This is because the author renamed the "House Kit" to "Disco Kit" and Ableton can't figure this out on its own how to find the files.Here's the fix: Click the "missing files" error message at the bottom left of the app window. A "locate missing files" section will appear in the upper right corner. Set Ableton to do an auto-search inside the folder from the book you've downloaded from Halleonard.com. Ableton will find 13 of the 16 missing files automatically and replace them correctly. The last 3 files you have to manually locate within the folder and manually drag and drop onto the Missing files section. All the sounds are there for the kit, you "just" have to locate them and drag them onto the files(see the attached photos in this review if you don't know which subfolder to go into to locate the correct files). Go to "EDM Groove Samples" then into the subfolder "House" then into both the "Snares" and "Hi hats" subfolders. The 3 last files are located in those folders.Final step: The file names for the 3 last files are messed up and probably won't make sense but just trust me on this one: "Snare 1.wav" from the should be dragged onto the missing files slot called "House Kit 4.aif". You should place "Snare 2.wav" onto the missing file slot called "House Kit 8.aif. "Hi-hat loose.aif" should be dragged onto the missing "House Hi Hat 1" in the missing files section.Once you've dragged the .wav file onto the missing file slot in Ableton, Ableton will create an .asd file for the sound within the downloaded folder from Halleonard and you should be able to trigger and use all the samples within the House/Disco Kit.It took me some time to figure this out but I really hope this helps. It's really an amazing book that you don't want to miss out on!

Amazing book if you want drum patterns for electronic music as well as other styles this is the book for you.My only complaint is the drum patterns can be a bit hard to read in gray scale.

It has everything it says it has plus some multimedia content to download and some nice explanations.

This book may have been good at one time. Now it's junk.The files currently on their janky website don't match with the lessons in the book. The printed install instructions also don't match. Additionally, some of the kits use features that are only available in the top tier Ableton Live Suite packages. If you own Ableton Live Standard, they will not load. There's no reason to use those features (Operator and Sampler) instead of the simple samples used elsewhere.Without accurate functioning drum kits, all of the tutorials are meaningless.Natalie in support at Hal Leonard was no help in solving these problems. Communication was nearly non existent.After months of getting no where with Hal Leonard, I tried emailing Josh Bess directly. He never responded.Avoid this book, and any book published by Hal Leonard that requires digital files. They have no interest in maintaining them.

Great book. Gives plenty of examples to work on.
